The much anticipated Team BBC £100 A Man Open Tournament that took place in Pool World in Neath over the weekend of the 21st. and 22nd. June was well and truly enhanced at the eleventh hour by the attendance of Cuesport TV.
With the likes of Mick Hill, Christophe Lambert, Paul Coldrick, Ronan McCarthy, Steve Munro and Scott Higgins making the journey to South Wales this was always going to be a great event but Cuesport TV turned it into a mega event and one that Team BBC were more than proud to host.
The format for the tournament which was played to 'Blackball Rules' was best of 29 frames all the way through with each round being re-drawn FA Cup Style..

A reflection on the weekend from the English point of view!
Ever since summer 2007 when agreement over a unified representative university pool event was reached between Ireland’s Higher Education Snooker & Pool Council and the United Kingdom’s Universities Pool Council, the tension and expectation had been steadily building to a crescendo that has now ended the academic year 2007-2008’s pool calendar with a truly showpiece event.

Student Home Internationals
Premier Inn, Glasgow City-Centre South
The English Universities pool team for Glasgow ‘08 shows a high turnover of players from that which was triumphant by a record margin at Leeds ‘07. That is not to say that I am at all unhappy with the team at my disposal though. The graduations of Martin Pratt and my talismanic former right-hand man Paul Edwards aside, all of those to have been in Leeds were present at the trials for Glasgow; and all but two were out-qualified by players who bettered them on the day!
Without being harsh, it would be fair to say there were a few players only there to make up the numbers at last year’s inaugural trials. This year, however, out of a total of sixty-one nomination forms received, forty-three could quite easily make a strong case for a trial at the least. As it turned out, the 32-player field comprised those, and only those, who could lay claim to (at least) one of the following criteria:
- a 60% average for their university team in Coventry;
- a last-32 finish in the Billiards Boutique Individual Championship;
- having been a previous English Universities team member; or
- a more-than respectable record from the world of mainstream pool.
Without further ado, allow me to give you a run-down of my team...

English Universities team for Glasgow '08 finalised
The English Universities pool team to attend April's Student Home Internationals in Glasgow was finalised on Sunday 30th March at Riley's Hertford Place, Coventry.
Six players from a thirty-two player Swiss system would ultimately join Rich Wharton of Anglia Ruskin University and the University of the West of England's Lee Morris in the eight-man team.
The standard of the field this year showed a marked improvement on last year's inaugural trials. Without being harsh, it would be fair to say that a fair few players were there just to make the numbers up last year. This year, despite four reserves being called in, every single trialist could lay claim to at least one of the following criteria:
- a last 32 finish in the Billiards Boutique Individual Championship;
- a 60% average in team play;
- having been a previous English Universities team member;
- a more-than respectable record in mainstream pool.
But don't just take my word for it - to evidence my assertion let's take a round-by-round look at those who missed out...
